Build with GPT-5.6: openai.com/index/gpt-5-6/
GPT-5.6 comes in three model tiers. → Sol handles long-horizon coding and agentic work that demands planning, tool use, and follow-through. → Terra balances performance and cost for everyday work. → Luna brings speed to well-defined, high-volume work. Across knowledge-work evaluations, GPT-5.6 Terra surpasses GPT-5.5 at lower cost, while GPT-5.6 Luna nearly matches GPT-5.5’s peak performance at well under half the estimated API cost. t.co/XLGYkgiOlE
From spoken spec to working service. Sam Kronick, an engineer on @tryramp’s Applied AI team, used GPT-5.6 to build an entire service end-to-end from a natural-language spec.

We’re bringing Codex and ChatGPT together in one desktop app. The same powerful coding agent, now alongside ChatGPT Work, with new coding workflows, a new Chrome extension, revamped in-app browser, and faster Computer Use powered by GPT-5.6. x.com/OpenAI/status/…
If you use the Codex app today, update it as usual. It will become the new ChatGPT desktop app, where Codex has its own dedicated space. Here’s what’s new for developers:
GPT-5.6 is rolling out in the API. Sol is our flagship model, leading in coding, knowledge work, cybersecurity, and science. Terra delivers performance competitive with GPT-5.5 at lower cost. Luna is our fastest, most affordable model for high-volume tasks.
GPT-5.6 is built for greater token efficiency. On the Artificial Analysis Coding Agent Index, Sol with max reasoning sets a new high of 80 while using 54% fewer output tokens and completing tasks in 57% less time than the next-highest-scoring model. Across knowledge-work evaluations, Terra surpasses GPT-5.5 at lower cost, while Luna nearly matches GPT-5.5’s peak performance at well under half the estimated API cost.

As agents take on longer-running work, engineering shifts to setting direction, reviewing work, and designing better systems around the models. @steipete at @aiDotEngineer
⚙️ We debugged a year’s worth of crashes in our data infrastructure and found one issue in the hardware and another that has been unnoticed in open-source code for 18 years. Here’s how we tracked them down: openai.com/index/core-dum…
Your favorite Codex shortcuts are getting an upgrade. July 15th.
🆕 Codex quality-of-life updates landed this week Starting with long threads: scrolling is smoother now, and your place stays put as you move through the conversation.
Long Codex threads now have a navigation rail. Hover over the gutter to preview nearby turns, then click one to jump straight to that point instead of scrolling through the entire conversation.

🧵 Open source runs on more than code. Over the past week, we funded maintainers directly, invested in Rust and its ecosystem, launched Patch the Planet for AI-assisted security work, and expanded Codex for OSS to more maintainers.
We started with the open-source projects we rely on. Through GitHub Sponsors, we renewed and expanded direct support for the maintainers behind open-source dependencies many teams build on. x.com/23191588/statu…
Codex works like a research partner for iOS and macOS developer @PaulSolt as he explores new frameworks and moves faster on ideas he couldn’t build before.
Show Codex a workflow once. Reuse it as a skill. Record & Replay lets you show Codex a recurring task, like filing an expense report or submitting a time-off request. Codex turns that demo into an inspectable, editable skill. You control when recording starts and stops.
Record & Replay is an optional feature rolling out to select markets, with broader availability to come. developers.openai.com/codex/changelo…
Last week, we hosted Women who Code(x) The output: task agents, personal guides, and a lot of projects shipped with Codex
Open source projects depend on the maintainers who review, release, secure, and steward the infrastructure many teams build on. We’re proud to support the @rust_foundation's work. rustfoundation.org/media/rust-fou…
More of Codex is rolling out across Europe this week. We’re bringing Computer use, the Codex Chrome extension, personalized memory, and Chronicle to Codex users in the EEA, UK, and Switzerland. developers.openai.com/codex/changelo…
Use the OpenAI Developers plugin in Codex to build faster with OpenAI tools by setting up API keys, finding the right docs, and debugging along the way.
Codex is how @ndrewpignanelli at @intelligenceco updates multiple parts of a website in parallel, turning a week of work into three days.
Ask our developer docs. They’ll show you the way The new docs agent on 🔗developers.openai.com helps you find answers about OpenAI products and takes you directly to the relevant documentation.
And it doesn’t stop at answers. Describe what you’re building and the agent will create a custom guide with a tailored prompt and relevant resources. Open the guide in Codex or copy it as Markdown for your coding agent.
Introducing developer mode for browser use in Chrome and the Codex in-app browser. Codex can use the Chrome DevTools Protocol (CDP) to debug browser issues by profiling JavaScript performance and inspecting console output, network traffic, and page state.
Invite a friend to Codex and add another reset to the bank. When they send their first Codex message, you’ll both bank one to use when you need it. Rate limit banking is rolling out to Go, Plus, Pro, and Business users, with the first reset on us. x.com/OpenAI/status/…
Through June 24, Plus and Pro users can refer up to three friends. Send this to the developer friends who keep asking for your Codex setup 😉
For musician and composer @sound4movement, Codex works like a studio assistant. He asks for a piano track in 3/4, sets the tempo and harmony, then describes how the performance should build. Codex handles the setup in Ableton Live. Michael stays focused on the creative work.
Your app can now search the web for images. Web search in the Responses API now supports image results in addition to text results, so you can build apps that surface products, places, visual references, and source links for inspiration.
23,000+ ChinaRxiv papers are now freely available with more complete English translations after one developer replaced a complex OCR pipeline with GPT‑5.5. x.com/seconds_0/stat…
