One lessons learned from the 1950s is that public private partnerships were essential in enabling scaling from basic science to operational prodution of 50 million sterilized flies per week using preexisting modular structures (airplane hangers) in months, not years. Successful eradication of NWS was an incredible success story of science at scale and rapid time lines coupled to international cooperation. We should be able to replicate that approach today to accelerate SIT capacity to augment USDA’s current bold plan that focuses on new, fixed facility construction. Although it is a bold plan, it will take time to achieve initial operational SIT capacity and then full design capacity. Are there challenges to overcome in order to close the time gap before the fixed facilities come on line to augment the current plan? Yes. Can authorities over come those challenges with additional operational approaches? I believe so.

USDA faces scrutiny as screwworm cases mount - The Washington Post washingtonpost.com/politics/2026/…
This is necessary and welcomed. But SIT is the only proven way to eradicate NWS. There are available options that can scale in months, not years, that are not being deployed for reasons that are beyond me. We need to put multiple shots on goal to start closing the widening gap of what is required, when it is required, and what is coming concerning SIT capacity. I hope that I am wrong in my analysis of USDA’s current plan. Time will tell. My only concern is protecting American ranchers, consumers, and our economic security. No more politically finger pointing, please.

I applaud the USDA and Texas Animal Health authorities for committing to the new SIT facility in South Texas. However, it will be too late and not sufficient capacity needed to push screwworms back to the Darian Gap. There is an option that can be accelerated to fill the time gap x.com/drkatlindley/s…
NWS eradication was a remarkable accomplishment of science at scale and required close international cooperation. With re-introduction of screwworms north of the Darian Gap in 2022 followed by Central America, Mexico, and now the U.S. in 2026, we will see if we can do it again. x.com/ans_org/status…
