Also, @gabepereyra, it has been fun watching your progression from undergrad to one of the residents in our first Google Brain Residency class to then co-founding Harvey. That first Brain Residency class has an amazing density of talent (all of them did, really), and I relish in watching you all do amazing things.
Tomorrow will be my last day at Google after 27 years, and watching it grow from 25 people to 190,000+ has been an amazing journey. Below is a note I shared with many people internally at Google today. An excerpt is: It has been an absolute pleasure to work with you and to help build some of the most widely used and impactful products of all time. As a kid, I dreamed of helping build software that would be used by many people, and Google now has thirteen products used by more than a billion people (amazing!). Our work has had a tremendous impact in the world, and I have been lucky enough to collaborate and form friendships with many colleagues that I deeply admire, respect, and enjoy. It still brings me joy every time I see people out in the world using our products to find information, handle email, translate documents, watch videos, learn new things, navigate and understand the physical world, browse the web, use their phone, run large-scale computations on our infrastructure, ride in an autonomous vehicle, or perform complex tasks with the help of our AI systems. I hope you all share this sense of joy, because it is a shared accomplishment! Thank you to all of my colleagues at Google over many years! Announcing Discovery Loop! I am very excited to announce that, along with my longtime friends and collaborators @Sanjay_Ghemawat, @OriolVinyalsML and @quocleix, we are founding Discovery Loop (@DiscoLoopAI), a Public Benefit Corporation whose mission is to automate machine learning, science, and engineering to accelerate discoveries and progress. Our general approach is to automate the experimental loop. We think this approach is broadly applicable across many different fields of science and engineering. We’ll initially focus on ML research and engineering, but believe the approach can help with important subproblems in nearly every one of the fourteen <at>NAE Grand Challenge problems. We think doing this well requires strong expertise in machine learning as well as large-scale systems.

Yesterday I was fortunate enough to go to my first-ever World Cup game, with my long-time colleagues/friends @OriolVinyalsML and @quocleix and their spouses). We were sitting in the corner area and had a quite good view of the goal! I present to you a 43 second multi-part drama filled with emotion: The initial promising-looking cross coming in, but looking overhit Nico Williams cleverly knocking it down at the back post into a dangerous area Ferran Torres striking it cleanly into the roof of the net The crowd rising as one (forcing me to stand up as well) The elation of the Spanish players racing off the bench to celebrate The dejection of the Argentinian players, their defense having finally been breached in extra time The elation of my Spanish colleague Oriol and his wife Meire next to me (he and I are both Barça fans, so it was nice to see a Barça player score the winning goal) The entire stadium reacting Whew!

My @Google colleagues @NormJouppi, Sridhar Lakshmanamurthy, Cliff Young, and David Patterson recently wrote a paper that will appear in the July/August 2026 edition of @ieeemicro titled "Google's Training Supercomputers from TPU v2 to Ironwood: Architectural Stability, Scale, Resilience, Power Efficiency, and Sustainability Across Five Generations". It's chock full of interesting data about the evolution of TPU chip generations, as well as how workloads at Google have transformed over time (hint: lots more transformer-based models!), and how the generations have gotten ~30X more energy efficient per flop. Lots of changes over these generations: Air cooling in TPUv2 to water cooling in TPUv3 onwards 2D to 3D torus-based interconnects 30X improvement TFLOPS/Watt 256 chips (TPUv2) to 9216 chips (Ironwood) per pod Read the full paper: t.co/D5NFYFv19V
